Roughly 40% of what you do on a given day is not decided in the moment - it runs as habit. This course is about the architecture behind that automatic behavior: how the brain builds it, why it sticks, and how to redesign it. It starts with the smallest repeating unit of any habit: the loop.
The cue-routine-reward structure of habits and its basal-ganglia basis are well-established across animal and human studies.
Role: The dorsal striatum binds a cue to an action and a reward into a single repeatable routine - the physical home of the habit loop.
This practice: Each completed loop, when rewarded, strengthens the striatal circuit that runs it.
A habit is not a single thing - it is a loop with three parts that always run in the same order:
The trigger that starts the loop - a time, a place, a feeling, or the action that came just before. The cue tells the brain which routine to launch.
The behavior itself - what you actually do. This is the part most people try to change, and the hardest to change in isolation.
What the brain gets out of it - relief, pleasure, stimulation, escape. The reward is why the loop gets reinforced and repeated.
Most change attempts target only the routine - "just stop doing it" - while leaving the cue and reward untouched. That is why willpower alone tends to fail: the cue keeps firing and the reward keeps being missed, so the loop keeps demanding its routine. Working with all three parts, rather than fighting one, is the whole strategy of this course.
The loop is also why habits are efficient. Once a behavior is looped, the brain offloads it from effortful, conscious control to automatic control - freeing attention for other things. That efficiency is a feature when the habit serves you and a trap when it does not.
The next lessons open up each part of the loop: the brain system that stores it (Lesson 2), the dopamine signal that reinforces it (Lesson 3), how control shifts from deliberate to automatic (Lesson 4), and then the practical work of reading your cues, breaking unwanted loops, and designing new ones.
