Almost everyone has lain awake replaying the same worry on a loop, getting nowhere. That loop has a name - rumination - and it is one of the most common and most retrainable thought patterns there is. This course is about recognizing the loop and learning to step out of it.
Rumination is a well-defined, well-studied construct linked to mood disorders; its default-mode-network basis is an active and well-supported research area.
Role: Rumination engages the default mode network - the brain's self-referential, mind-wandering system - keeping attention turned inward on the same distressing content.
This practice: Learning to notice and redirect the loop trains attention away from this circuit.
Rumination is repetitive, passive thinking about your distress and its causes and consequences - without moving toward a solution. The defining features: it circles the same content, it focuses on the problem rather than the fix, and it feels involuntary, like the thoughts are happening to you. "Why do I always feel this way? What's wrong with me? Why did I say that?" - round and round, with no exit.
The cruel trick of rumination is that it feels like problem-solving. You are thinking hard about a real problem, so it seems useful. But research distinguishes the two sharply: problem-solving moves toward an action or a resolution, while rumination just re-circulates the distress. Hours of rumination leave you more upset and no closer to a solution - it is motion without progress, and it reliably deepens low mood rather than lifting it.
The same thoughts cycle without resolving, often for hours.
It dwells on the problem and your distress, not on any concrete next step.
Far from venting the feeling, rumination amplifies and prolongs it.
Rumination is a habit of attention, and attention is trainable - the central lever of this whole school. You cannot stop the first thought from arising, but you can learn to catch the loop early and redirect, which over time weakens it. The rest of this course builds that skill, combining the cognitive tools you already met with mindfulness-based attention training.

The first power move is simply labeling it: "I'm ruminating." Naming converts an invisible loop into something you can choose to step out of.
