David Glenn, PMHNP-BC is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience helping people reclaim restful sleep. He designed this course to share the same evidence-based strategies he uses with his patients -- in a format you can access on your own time.

Autumn Persinger, PMHNP-BC is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who brings warmth and clinical expertise to the intersection of sleep science and mental health care. Her approach emphasizes meeting you where you are and building from there.

This course is designed to be gentle and non-judgmental. There is no "right" way to sleep, and no one is grading you. Whatever your sleep looks like right now is simply where you are starting -- and that is perfectly okay.

  2. Be honest with yourself. The more openly you engage with the exercises and assessments, the more you will get from this course.
  3. Practice self-compassion. Changing sleep habits takes time. Small improvements matter more than perfection.

Why Sleep Matters for Mental Health

You have probably heard that adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. But sleep is far more than just "resting." While you sleep, your brain is remarkably active -- carrying out processes that are essential for your mental and emotional well-being.

Think of Your Brain Like a City

During the day, the city is busy -- traffic flowing, businesses open, people working. But every night, the city's maintenance crews come out. They repair roads, clean streets, sort the day's mail, and prepare everything for tomorrow. If those crews never got to work, the city would slowly fall apart.

That is exactly what happens in your brain. Sleep is when your brain's "maintenance crews" get to work -- processing emotions, consolidating memories, clearing waste, and restoring the chemicals you need to function well the next day.

When sleep is disrupted or cut short, those maintenance tasks go unfinished. Over time, this can contribute to difficulties with mood, concentration, decision-making, and emotional regulation -- all of which are closely connected to mental health.

About one-third. The average person sleeps roughly 26 years over a lifetime. Far from wasted time, this is when your brain does its most critical maintenance work.

Sleep Architecture: What Happens While You Sleep

Sleep is not one uniform state. Your brain cycles through distinct stages multiple times each night, and each stage serves a different purpose. Understanding these stages can help you appreciate why the quality of your sleep matters just as much as the quantity.

Stage N1: The Transition (5-10 minutes)

This is the lightest stage of sleep -- the bridge between wakefulness and rest. Your muscles begin to relax, your heart rate slows, and your brain produces alpha and theta waves. You can be easily awakened during this stage, and you might experience brief muscle jerks (called hypnic jerks) or a sensation of falling. What it does for you: N1 prepares your body and brain to transition into deeper, more restorative stages. Think of it as your brain gently shifting gears.

Stage N2: Light Sleep (~20 minutes per cycle)

Your body temperature drops, your heart rate and breathing become more regular, and your brain produces bursts of rapid activity called "sleep spindles." These spindles are believed to play a key role in learning and memory consolidation. What it does for you: N2 is where your brain starts sorting and filing the information from your day. It is also when your body begins its physical repair work. This stage makes up roughly 50% of total sleep.

Stage N3: Deep Sleep (20-40 minutes per cycle)

This is the deepest and most restorative stage. Your brain produces large, slow delta waves. It is very difficult to wake someone during N3, and if you are awakened, you will likely feel groggy and disoriented. What it does for you: N3 is when your body does its heaviest repair work -- releasing growth hormone, strengthening your immune system, and restoring physical energy. For mental health, deep sleep is essential for emotional resilience and the ability to cope with stress the next day.

REM Sleep: The Dream Stage (10-60 minutes)

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. During this stage, your eyes move rapidly behind closed lids, your brain activity increases to near-waking levels, and most vivid dreaming occurs. Your body enters a state of temporary muscle paralysis (called atonia) to prevent you from acting out your dreams. What it does for you: REM sleep is critical for emotional processing and memory consolidation. Research shows that during REM, your brain processes difficult emotions from the day, stripping away the intense emotional charge so you can recall events without being overwhelmed by them.

Why Morning Matters

Your brain cycles through these stages roughly four to six times per night, with each cycle lasting about 90 minutes. Deep sleep dominates the first half of the night, while REM sleep increases in the second half. This is why cutting your sleep short by even an hour or two can disproportionately reduce your REM sleep -- and with it, your emotional processing.

The Sleep-Anxiety Connection

If you have ever noticed that a bad night of sleep makes you feel more anxious, or that anxiety makes it harder to fall asleep, you are experiencing one of the most well-documented relationships in mental health research.

The relationship between sleep and anxiety is bidirectional -- meaning each one influences the other in a continuous loop:

Poor Sleep --> Increased Anxiety --> Difficulty Sleeping --> More Anxiety

This cycle can feel overwhelming, but the good news is that it works in reverse too. Improving your sleep can reduce anxiety, and reducing anxiety can improve your sleep. Any positive change you make on either side of this loop benefits the other.

How Sleep Deprivation Affects the Brain

When you do not get enough sleep, two critical parts of your brain are affected in ways that directly impact your mental health:

Your amygdala -- the brain's emotional alarm center -- becomes hyperactive, up to 60% more reactive to negative stimuli. This means everyday situations can trigger stronger fear, worry, and irritability responses.

The Car with No Brakes

Imagine driving a car where the gas pedal (your amygdala) is stuck at full throttle, and the brake pedal (your prefrontal cortex) barely works. That is what your brain looks like after a night of poor sleep. You are more emotionally reactive and less able to calm yourself down.

Sleep restores the brake pedal. When you sleep well, the connection between these brain regions strengthens, giving you the ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.

A Real-World Example

Sarah has a presentation at work tomorrow. After sleeping only four hours, she wakes up feeling on edge. A coworker makes a neutral comment about the presentation, and Sarah immediately interprets it as criticism, feeling a wave of anger and hurt. After a full night of sleep the following week, the same kind of comment barely registers. The difference is not the comment -- it is the state of her brain. With adequate sleep, her prefrontal cortex can accurately assess the situation instead of letting her amygdala overreact.

The Glymphatic System: Your Brain's Cleanup Crew

One of the most exciting discoveries in sleep science in recent years is the glymphatic system -- a waste-clearance network that operates primarily during deep sleep.

Throughout the day, your brain produces metabolic waste as a byproduct of normal activity. These waste products include proteins like beta-amyloid, which have been linked to neurodegenerative conditions when they accumulate over time.

The Overnight Deep Clean

During deep sleep, your brain cells actually shrink by about 60 percent, creating wider channels between them. Cerebrospinal fluid then rushes through these channels, flushing out the day's accumulated waste. It is like your brain opens the floodgates for a thorough overnight cleaning.

When you do not get enough deep sleep, this cleaning process is incomplete -- like skipping the nightly dishes. One night is no big deal, but over time, the buildup affects how clearly you think and how well you feel.
