Most people experience their "self" as a solid, continuous identity that persists across years. Yet neuroscience reveals that this feeling is produced by dynamic, moment-to-moment patterns of activity in cortical midline structures-especially the medial prefrontal cortex and posterior cingulate cortex-rather than an unchanging entity. Understanding this distinction is the first step toward using evidence-based practices to shape a more flexible and values-consistent identity.
In practical terms, when you notice rigid self-statements like "I am an anxious person" or "I always fail," you are witnessing a neural pattern that has been reinforced over time. The good news, supported by imaging and intervention studies, is that these patterns remain plastic throughout adulthood. Techniques drawn from Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) can deliberately reconfigure the default-mode network so that the sense of self becomes a context for chosen values rather than a fixed label.
Meta-analyses of fMRI experiments consistently show that tasks asking participants to reflect on "Who am I?" activate a predictable set of cortical midline structures (Northoff et al., 2006). These regions-medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate cortex, and precuneus-form the core of the default-mode network (DMN). When the DMN is active, the brain is not engaged with external sensory input; instead, it is simulating, remembering, and forecasting in service of an internal narrative about the self.

The DMN is metabolically expensive; it consumes ~20 % of the brain’s energy even at rest. Small, repeated shifts in its connectivity patterns can therefore have outsized effects on mood and behavior.
Crucially, these networks are not destiny. Longitudinal neuroimaging demonstrates that chronic stress enlarges amygdala reactivity while shrinking hippocampal and prefrontal volumes, tilting the DMN toward threat-focused self-talk (Davidson & McEwen, 2012). Conversely, mindfulness- and values-based interventions produce measurable increases in prefrontal gray matter and reduced amygdala activation, effectively rewiring the DMN toward more adaptive self-referential processing.
ACT targets six interlocking processes-cognitive defusion, acceptance, present-moment awareness, self-as-context, values clarification, and committed action-that together loosen rigid self-concepts. Laboratory component studies show that even brief training in acceptance and defusion significantly reduces emotional avoidance (Levin et al., 2012). When you practice noticing thoughts as transient events rather than immutable truths, you exercise the very circuits that maintain the DMN’s flexibility.
