What Are Values, Really?

When people say they want to "live according to their values," they often mistake values for goals. Goals are destinations you can check off-lose 10 pounds, get the promotion, finish the degree. Values, however, are the compass directions you choose to walk toward, indefinitely, whether or not you ever fully arrive. They are qualities of action, not outcomes of action.

Understanding this distinction matters because neuroscience shows that goals recruit different brain circuits than values. Goals light up the striatum and dopamine-rich reward prediction systems (Schultz et al., 1997), giving a brief spike of satisfaction when achieved. Values, by contrast, recruit the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate-regions that sustain motivation over long time horizons by linking actions to self-referential meaning (Northoff et al., 2006). When daily choices are framed as values instead of goals, the prefrontal cortex keeps the amygdala’s short-term alarms from hijacking your behavior, creating steadier emotional baselines (Davidson & McEwen, 2012).

The Neuroscience of Chosen Directions

In Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), values are deliberately chosen life directions. fMRI studies show that when you articulate values, the ventromedial prefrontal cortex-central to self-referential processing-becomes more active, integrating memory, emotion, and future planning (Levin et al., 2012; Northoff et al., 2006). This same region down-regulates amygdala reactivity under stress, allowing you to act according to meaning rather than mood.

Values never finish. You can’t check off "being a loving parent" the way you check off "read bedtime story tonight." The former is a quality you can bring to every interaction; the latter is a discrete task.

Why Goals Alone Fail

Goals are vulnerable to the "what’s next?" trap. Once reached, dopamine firing drops unless a new goal is set, creating hedonic adaptation. Values, however, provide an inexhaustible source of motivation because they describe how you want to behave, not what you want to attain. ACT meta-analyses show that interventions focused on values clarification increase psychological flexibility and reduce distress even when concrete goals remain distant (A-Tjak et al., 2015; Levin et al., 2012).

Translating Values into Daily Behavior

Values become real only when instantiated in specific, observable actions. Behavioral Activation (BA) provides the bridge: schedule activities that embody your values, monitor the experience, and adjust. Because BA leverages the basal ganglia’s habit-formation machinery (Graybiel, 2008), repeatedly choosing values-consistent actions turns deliberate effort into automatic habit loops.

Name the Domain

Pick a life area (e.g., parenting, creativity, health).

Clarify the Quality

Finish the sentence: "In this domain, I want to be the kind of person who..."

Choose One Small Action

Identify a 5-minute behavior that embodies that quality today.

Track & Iterate

Notice how you feel during and after; refine tomorrow.

  • Write down one overarching value in your own words (not a goal).
  • Identify three concrete actions you could take this week that align with that value.
  • Schedule one of those actions in your calendar right now.
  • After completing it, note the degree of meaning or vitality you felt (0-10 scale).
