Stress is not simply an external event-it's a person-environment transaction shaped by how you appraise situations and available resources. The HPA axis coordinates your body's acute stress response (cortisol, epinephrine, norepinephrine), which is adaptive and time-limited. However, chronic stress disrupts this system, leading to abnormal cortisol levels, neuroinflammation, and structural brain changes. Understanding these mechanisms is the first step toward effective stress management.

You've probably heard people say "I'm so stressed" dozens of times this week-maybe you've said it yourself. But what does stress actually mean from a scientific perspective?
Stress is a transaction between you and your environment. It's not just what happens to you-it's how you interpret what happens, combined with how you evaluate your ability to cope. This model, developed by psychologists Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman in the 1980s, remains the foundation of modern stress science.
When you encounter a potential stressor, your brain runs a two-stage appraisal process:
This is why the same situation-a presentation at work, a difficult conversation, a deadline-creates different stress responses in different people, or even in the same person at different times.
Your brain's first evaluation: "Is this a threat, a challenge, harm, or irrelevant?" This happens automatically and shapes your initial emotional response.
Your brain's second evaluation: "What resources do I have? Can I handle this?" This determines whether you feel overwhelmed or capable.
Stress emerges from the interaction between demands and your perceived ability to meet them-not from demands alone.
The same objective stressor produces different responses depending on skills, past experience, current state, and available support.
When you appraise a situation as threatening or challenging, your body activates a coordinated physiological response designed to help you survive. This response is ancient, evolutionarily adaptive, and involves multiple body systems working together.
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is your body's primary stress response system. Here's how it works:
Alongside the HPA axis, your sympathetic nervous system triggers the release of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine. This is the "fight-or-flight" response you've likely heard about. It happens within seconds-faster than the HPA axis-and creates immediate physical changes:
This response is adaptive when you face a real, immediate threat. It helped your ancestors outrun predators. Today, it helps you slam on the brakes when a car cuts you off.
Not all stress is harmful. In fact, acute stress-short-term activation in response to a specific challenge-can enhance performance, focus, and learning. The problems arise when stress becomes chronic.
